Scripps helps empower women through academic knowledge. Part of the Claremont University Consortium, the all-women liberal arts college maintains an enrollment of fewer than 1,000 students to encourage active participation in academic and campus life. Students participate in the Core Curriculum for their first three semesters at Scripps; the Core consists of lectures, team teaching, and seminar classes. The college also offers a wide range of courses from art to mathematics to psychology. Notable alumni include late best-selling author Molly Ivins and former White House chief counsel Beth Nolan. The college was founded in 1926 by Ellen Browning Scripps, a newspaper publisher and philanthropist.
