Franklin & Marshall College, named after Benjamin Franklin and John Marshall, is a private liberal arts institution serving about 2,400 students. It offers academic and research programs in about 60 fields including biology, chemistry, English, history, mathematics, political science, art, sociology, and environmental studies. It offers programs in 11 languages including Arabic and Greek. Franklin & Marshall College was created in 1853 through the merger of Franklin College (founded in 1787 with a contribution from Ben Franklin) and Marshall College (opened in 1836 and named after Chief Justice John Marshall).
