The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world’s foremost scientific museums. Its landmark building on New York’s Central Park West showcases parts of its immense collections of anthropological and zoological specimens, along with meteorites, gemstones, dinosaur fossils, and a butterfly conservatory. The museum, which is also home to the Rose Center for Earth and Space and the Hayden Planetarium, and a top-flight research library, conducts many educational programs, offers an IMAX theater, and publishes Natural History magazine. The American Museum of Natural History is part of the University of the State of New York. The museum was chartered by the New York legislature in 1869.
