“The Gateway to the West” is bordered by the Mississippi River on the east and occupies approximately 62 square miles with a population of more than 300,000. The government of the City of St. Louis is comprised of the city’s mayor and a Board of Aldermen (made up of 28 elected members, in addition to the board president). Unlike most city governments, the mayor shares executive authority with other independent citywide elected officials, such as the treasurer and comptroller. During the 21st century, St. Louis has transitioned from a manufacturing and industrial economy to one heavily dependent on medicine, biotechnology, and other sciences. It is home to MLB’s St. Louis Cardinals and NFL’s St. Louis Rams.
