The Conservation Fund was green before green was cool. The nonprofit organization is well known for negotiating deals to protect environmentally sensitive lands. It will typically purchase property, financed through a revolving land fund, federal and state grants, and contributions from various sources, and sell it back to local groups to manage. It also invests in small businesses that show a sustainable use of natural resources, as well as works with communities and other not-for-profits to plan for growth and conservation. Since its founding in 1985, the Fund and its partners have protected more than 7 million acres of wildlife habitat and watersheds, working landscapes, and open-spaces in all 50 US states.
