The Durst Organization wants to turn the Big Apple into a Green Apple. The company develops, owns, and manages commercial real estate in midtown Manhattan; its portfolio includes more than eight million sq. ft. of commercial space. It is also a leader in developing environmentally-sound buildings. Its flagship “green” property 4 Times Square features the first major commercial use of photovoltaic panels (solar energy window panels) and uses an energy-efficient HVAC system. (Its facade features a giant, energy-saving electronic display that can be read from as far away as New Jersey.) The Durst Organization was founded by Joseph Durst in 1915 and is still owned and run by the Durst family.
